The itinerary of the trip will be as the following:
7.30 a.m. Depart from King’s Road to Coniston
10.30 a.m. – Arrival at Coniston
10.30 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. – Tour in Ruskin Museum
The Ruskin Museum as ‘the most thought-provoking in the Lakes’ for its authoritative and inspiring introduction to the history of Coniston from its geological origins, through its associated extractive industries of slate-quarrying and copper-mining, and its archaeology and industrial history, through land use and fell-farming, to its most famous literary and cultural icons – John Ruskin 1819-1900, the great Victorian pundit on art, architecture, & ethics & moral values, who was one of the first to identify the climate-changing results of industrialisation; Arthur Ransome 1884-1967, sometime Bohemian, journalist, possible secret agent, and the master story-teller who transformed children’s literature with his ‘Swallows & Amazons’ adventures; and Donald Campbell 1921-1967, the legendary Speed Ace who broke the World Water Speed Record seven times [four of them on Coniston Water, where he was killed, attempting an eighth Record] in his innovative jet-powered hydroplane, Bluebird K7.
12.00 p.m. – 2 p.m. : Outdoor Walk
Walk and lunch (pack or buy your own) (We’re going to follow ‘the Coniston notebook trail’. You should have received a pdf file in your mail, so read more about it if it sparks your interest.) It’s an easy and very walkable trail.
Which then leads us to…
2.30 p.m. : Boat Cruise
40 mins Cruise around the Coniston lake. The boats are solar and battery electric powered so that should be interesting.
4 p.m. : Depart for Newcastle.
For all this, the trip will only cost you £28. *Which includes the transportation fees to and fro to Coniston, the entry fees for Ruskin Museum and the cost of the Boat Cruise.
However, if some of you are not too keen on the boat trip or to the museum, and want to just walk around Coniston we’ll sort something out for you.
For more enquiries, please feel free to email Phey Feng at p.f.lo@ncl.ac.uk.
